Posing takes a long time, and the conversations add to the painting.  Even in commissioned work, if I didn't know people before painting them, we had become good friends by the end of it.

I have painted portraits in cold gardens, hotel rooms, on-site in the gallery, churches, synagogues, offices, bedrooms, by pools, on beaches, in forests, in cars, on motorcycles, on television

camera sets; people bring their objects and I've painted favorite books, plates, shoes, cell phones, truncheons; people can bring their animals, and I am now familiar with the idiosyncratic

demeanor of all kinds of dogs, cats, birds, lizards, rodents, and insects .... I've painted portraits in oils for twenty years, and now in giant watercolors.  Portraits have always been an ongoing

exciting part of my art practice, because of the overwhelming experience of another person's humanity that is so immediate.
