When I did the paintings for The Derivative Show, I felt like I was receiving phone calls from dead painters. I'd be working away and suddenly my hand would turn a characteristic Vuillard move, or the palette would be coincidentally that of Matisse, or my bathers would have a bit of a Degas tussle. I called the last painting "Flowers for Patrick Caulfield" for a favorite painter who was at the time very alive and kicking hard at pure painting ideas: when he calls he shouts over the telephone line. I knew that he'd gone to Chelsea and I was hoping he'd come to speak there. Instead I saw him at his show at the Marlborough in London, and saw the paintings, still speaking and talking really loud! Derivative paintings are full of respect.
